So until there is a real world benchmark that showcases a valueable benefit from static precompilation compared to the LATEST (!) hotspot technology (not hotspot 1.3 or 1.4.2, but 1.5) I do not see that Java really needs a native compiler.
This is totally true if you consider server or personal computer with many memory. But if you consider embedded constraint systems where HotSpot is too large, you may need native compilation. Nevertheless, GCJ isn't the solution because it don't improve performance and don't need
