Hi - > Hi, look at my presentation of this morning to the Objectweb > architecture meeting which present some micro benchmarks > between GCJ 3.3.1 and Sun JVM 1.4.1 (JIT & Interpreted). [...] Interesting presentation. A few observations: - Many of the sorts of language omissions that Java-- uses are now or should before long become available as compile-time options for gcj. For example, memory consumption of gcj's libjava can be significantly reduced for given applications, when static linking is used. Pointer/bounds checking can already be turned on or off. - There is a qualitative difference between the value of proprietary JVMs and free ones. Even if the latter only approach e.g. Sun's HotSpot performance, a free software supporter may still throw her support behind the free projects on principle. This reasoning may be particularly sympathetic to a project like JOnAS that aims to provide a free software clone of an already widely implemented proprietary standard. - FChE
