Re: [fractal] Fractal packaging specification

Hi Eric,

here is a draft specification for Fractal packaging, which follows from the discussions on the Fractal mailing list. Comments are welcome, as well as ideas for source packages, legacy packages, version management...
I am not sure to understand what you exactly mean by legacy packages.
One thing that seems to be missing in the spec is the support of multiple implementations of the same component. The example I have in mind is what we have in LeWYS. We have different implementations of the same probe according to the platform (cpu probe for Linux is plain Java whereas the Windows version requires native calls to a DLL). Would there be a way to include these different implementations in the same package and select the right implementation based on some criteria (system properties or specific values understood by the deployment mechanism) with a default choice if no property can be matched? Another approach is to consider that this has nothing to do with packaging and that it should be different components with a specific deployment extension to handle this.

All suggestions are welcome to handle this issue.
Emmanuel
