Re: [celtix-dev] downloading the celtix

Ray/Wolfgang, If you could verify the download issue with latest version of firefox as peter suggested that would be really appreciated. The reason for shipping tgz files was that format seem to work consistently on both unix and windows platforms.

furthermore, the tar file format preseves file permissions so executables stay as executables on unix. The zip file format does not support this.

Looks like some of the firefox browser issues are creating problems with downloading and saving tgz files on windows.
Did anybody else notice this problem using other browsers on windows?

does anybody familiar with the firefox issue know if changing the suffix of the archive to .tar.gz will have any effect?

We will try and consider shipping a zip format to make windows users life easier in next milestone. Our goal is to try and make usage of celtix as much easy and straight forward as possible for Celtix users.

Currently celtix doesnt have any plans for providing an installer. we will try consider this in future. If anybody is willing to contribute installer support to celtix please dont hesitate to let us know. We certainly appreciate some community help towards this.

regards,
Adi

Hi Ray and Wolfgang,

I believe this is a bug in some versions of firefox. I
remember coming
across something very similar several months back downloading
some other
distribution. Here's a link to a similar mozilla bug (there are a few
others like it):
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=144334

Are you using the latest version of firefox? I tried with
1.0.7 on Windows
and 1.0.6 on Linux, and didn't see the problem.

Cheers,
Peter

I could not agree more with Ray. I ran into the same problem
and after 10 minutes of being annoyed, stopped playing around
with it altogether.

For the occasional lurker like myself, an installer would be
even better...Not everybody has the time to deploy everything
manually.

When I downloaded the celtix last week using firefox, it
automatically
append a "gz" at the end of name. I have to rename the file
back to tgz
to get it working. Several people ran into the same
problem as I. Why
are we using tgz here instead of zip or tar.Z
