Re: JOnAS comments

Hi Aaron,

sorry for the late answer, I just found your email under my spam
directoy :-) I also cc my answer to OpenUSS and JOnAS community...

I have come across your success story with JOnAS application server on jonas.objectweb.org. I was wondering if you could help answer a few questions about JOnAS. Our company is planning to build an enterprise application and we are looking into open-source application servers and JOnAS has caught our eye. You help with any or all of these issues would be extremely appreciated.

1) Are you satisfied with JOnAS performance?

Yup. We also use Enhydra Director to load balance
JOnAS installations. Please check this article for more details:
http://openuss01.uni-muenster.de/foundation/faculty/FacultyInfoDetailPage.po?FacultyInfoId=1086323847801

2) Did you run into any problems with the application server during development?

Nope. For the development we use EJOSA structure and process.
For more details please refer to EJOSA documentation:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ejosa/ejosa-revo-doc.pdf?download

EJOSA site:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ejosa

3) Do you run into any kind of problems with accessing your applications on JOnAS server in your production environment?

Nope. In the old days (it was JOnAS 2.4 or so) I had some problems with
memory leak but now with JOnAS 3.1 (yes, we still use JOnAS 3.1 but we
want to update to JOnAS 3.3.6) everything seems to work ok.

4) If you do run into problems how long does it typically to resolve an issue?

Very quick, just ask the JOnAS mailinglist. You normally get tbe answer
very fast...

5) Would you say that JOnAS customer service is almost as reliable and efficient as other commercial application server companies?

Hmm... I believe in Open Source community, so, I do think so :-)
I have to admit that I never had any commercial supports or so.
We also don't have any commercial support for our application.

6) What are the risks you feel you've taken on in choosing an open-source application server like JOnAS instead of a commercial application server?

Nothing at all and this is the advantage of *standard*! Since JOnAS is
*only* an implementation of the "J2EE specification", you always can
change the implementation if you are not happy with the current
implementation. One important thing is that you should *never* use the
vendor specific extension of the specification in your application, so
you will never need to change your application in case that you want to
change your application server. Using JOnAs specific optimization - as
long as it does not extend the concept - is ok.

7) Have you come across any bugs in the code or have you ever been faced with a situation where your application server was down and your business operations had come to a halt? What did you do in that situation?

Yes in the old time... ;-) I just asked the mailinglist of JOnAS.
Mostly I always get an answer in short time...

8) Do you host your server in-house?

Yes.

I greatly appreciate your answering my questions as we are still trying to determine the tradeoffs with using an open-source application server.

My thanks ahead of time for any info you are able to provide.

Your welcome! Again, go for JOnAS for development and you can use JOnAS
as well for production. Thanks to the standard like J2EE specification
you always can change your application server (commercial) if you want
to:
- Servlet is always servlet
- EJB is always EJB

Sincerely,

Aaron
