Dear ObjectWeb community member,
I personally want to inform you of a significant initiative we launched today, that will have a positive impact on ObjectWeb, ObjectWeb projects, ObjectWeb technology users and the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />OSS community as a whole.
For years, Bull has been a strong advocate, contributor, integrator and user of Open Source software, and is actively contributing to many large OSS communities such as OSDL, Apache, Eclipse and others. It is with this vision that Bull co-founded ObjectWeb in 2002, and has actively contributed to its successful development as one of the leading OSS consortiums worldwide today, with 4000 developers, 70 corporate members, and more than 100 projects.
Bull's mission is to help corporations get the best of an open world, by bridging technologies to foster innovation, interoperability and collective intelligence. It is in this spirit that, today, we are complementing our ObjectWeb strategic membership by a strategic partnership with JBoss.
Within this partnership, which is built on Bull's existing alliance with Red Hat, Bull will contribute to JBoss, in addition to ObjectWeb, Apache, Eclipse and others. As an integrator, Bull will include the JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite in its portfolio of open source solutions, known as "Open Energy", which already includes ObjectWeb's middleware. Bull and Red Hat will also work on interoperability between the JBoss community and the ObjectWeb consortium.
As Architect of an Open World, our goal is simple: accelerate OSS development for increased user confidence and enterprise deployment. By bridging the two most prominent open source middleware communities, this partnership will result in greater OSS middleware momentum and dynamics. By fostering cross-fertilization and full interoperability between ObjectWeb and JBoss, this partnership will extend the breadth of both ecosystems. Users of ObjectWeb and of JBoss technologies will have greater confidence in deploying solutions, knowing that both technologies will be able to finely work together.
More than ever, we reaffirm our commitment to ObjectWeb and to our multiple contributions to ObjectWeb projects such as JOnAS (the open application server project led by Bull), Bonita (workflow software), EasyBean, Orchestra (BPM), JASMINe and others. Specifically on JOnAS, we are delighted to see the number of contributors growing regularly, such as recently with China's OrientWare and Brazil's UNIFOR. Of course, Bull will continue to participate in JOnAS' success worldwide, not only working on the next JOnAS generation (JOnAS 5) with the same level of commitment, but also providing the best support and services to help JOnAS users to take advantage of this strategic technology.
I want to stress Bull's commitment to contribute to the future development and extension of ObjectWeb, codenamed ObjectWeb v2. Within the partnership announced today, Red Hat will strengthen its involvement with ObjectWeb, including working closely on ObjectWeb v2.
When we informed him of this news, Francois Letellier, Executive Director of ObjectWeb, told us: "From a Bull perspective, this move makes perfect sense. But it is also an excellent opportunity for ObjectWeb to develop closer relations with JBoss and their community of users – as anticipated when Red Hat announced the acquisition of JBoss. As an independent, nonprofit organization, ObjectWeb – ObjectWeb v2 soon – has an important role to play in the global open source middleware landscape that commercial entities cannot take in isolation. open source is first and foremost about collaboration, simply because it's a rational, proven approach to build commons and to develop innovative strategies in the software arena. I would like to congratulate Bull for its long-term commitment to open source and for paving the way today to new fruitful collaboration on enterprise-grade open source middleware. I also invite ObjectWeb members to welcome this announcement and explore new opportunities with an open mind."
More than ever, thanks to your help and support, a bright future is opening for ObjectWeb, ObjectWeb technology users, and the OSS community as a whole.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or Bull's team concerning this news. We are working with you and I am sure that we will keep on doing so for a long time.
Best regards,
Jean-Pierre Barberis
