Custom Exception Handling

I've searched through the mailing list archives and  documentation and
haven't found an answer that addresses failing gracefully.

I'm trying to write a custom exception handling servlet that will catch
runtime exceptions and redirect the user to a nice "we've encountered an
error" page instead of giving them the stack trace (as this freaks many
of our users out).

If there is no way of sending exceptions to a servlet at the Enhydra
level is it possible to edit the template that the web.xml file is
created from so it includes Tomcat specific error handling code??

I've spent a lot of time reading through the documentation and reading
through the message archives and am coming up short as to how to solve
this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.
