JOnAS On the Way to J2EE Certification
--------------------------------------
ObjectWeb is a J2EE(tm) Licensee since late January.

This simple piece of news announces an all new era for
J2EE applications servers. Simply put, JOnAS is the first
and only application server distributed under LGPL by a
non-profit organization to run for J2EE certification. So far,
there is no equivalent and no competition. This requires a
bit of explanation.

ObjectWeb is dedicated to developing Software Commons
in an open and non-profit fashion. The consortium itself is
vendor-neutral and does not lead any kind of commercial
activity. Unlike other providers of Java application servers,
ObjectWeb has actually been recognized a non-profit
organization by the JCP (Java Community Process). For
this reason, Sun awarded ObjectWeb the first scholarship
ever granted to help an organization undertake the
certification process.

JOnAS, as a whole, is licensed under LGPL. This license
guarantees that all code improvements will remain Open
Source, thus avoiding proprietary forks of the code base.
JOnAS, like other platforms from ObjectWeb, comes with
documentation and can be used by everyone at no charge.
This unrivaled level of transparency guaranties fair
competition between all commercial users. It also ensures
that vendors can freely contribute to the common good
without fearing that competitors turn their input into a
one-way gift.

In ObjectWeb's vision, the Java enterprise market is ready
for Open Source. The consortium members joined forces to
propose industrial-grade solutions that meet these
requirements. JOnAS is one of these, and the certification of
its compatibility to J2EE promises to be a major milestone in
its life.

Headlines
---------
ObjectWeb Licenses J2EE Technology

* The ObjectWeb Consortium is taking advantage of open
source license terms for the J2EE 1.4 platform specification
that Sun is making available for non-profit and open source
  projects.
* Christophe Ney, ObjectWeb Executive Director: "The grant
of Sun's support extended to us at no charge will be of great
help to certify the full compatibility of the JOnAS application
server with the J2EE Specifications. This is very important to
our community of enterprise developers and users. It will
consolidate the position of JOnAS as a keystone of our
  open-source ecosystem."

gained tremendous momentum last year, with dramatic increase
of audience, lots of new members, new projects of major
interest and a worldwide trend of adoption of our components. We
will keep pushing forward in 2004, in 3 directions: strategic
cooperation, industrial adoption and international development".

Enhydra Sites Migration

The Enhydra.org website and communities have finally merged with
Objectweb.org. After a long search the otter has found a home!

Objectweb now hosts all of the Enhydra.org projects on
forge.objectweb.org including CVS and the enhydra.org mailing
lists in its Sympa installation. The layout of all Enhydra.org
project websites was adopted to the new Objectweb design and Enhydra
news are now merged with Objectweb news. The portal page www.enhydra.org
represents the Enhydra project group within Objectweb.org.

After this important step in the merge, individual Enhydra projects are
now working on technical synergies with other Objectweb projects.

Community Survey

The three students from ENST (Ecole Nationale Superieure des
Telecomunications, Brest, France) who lead a study on ObjectWeb have now
completed their project. Here is an abstract of their main conclusions:

* Motivation: Objectweb is young and its members are motivated in their
work, interrested in the consortium. Their implication is really strong.
* Interest: Personnal interest in the middleware is one of the most
important reason for people to become and individual member in objectweb.
* Diversity: The number of different project in Objectweb is growing and is
really important. JOnAS seems to be the main known project, but a lot of
others project are here and are growing.
* Centralized: Members often have the feeling that the consortium and its
  decision system are centralized.
* Isolation: A lot of members are really dedicated to their project, and
don?t know much about other projects.
* Global satisfaction: Most of the members are satisfied of the results that
objectweb shows. A significant number of firms are ready to become a member.

Thanks to all the members who spared some time to make this study possible.
It will greatly help us improve the consortium organization, communication
and activity.
