ObjectWeb Kicks Off Eclipse WebTools Proposal
---------------------------------------------
The Eclipse IDE is an open-source platform of choice for Java
development. For the most demanding enterprise developers, Eclipse
and ObjectWeb provide complimentary offers that bring cutting-edge
open-source middleware and development platforms for e-business.
For this reason, the Eclipse consortium and ObjectWeb came closer
in late 2004. ObjectWeb offered to leverage its know-how in
professional open-source project management to kick off a new
proposal for the Eclipse Web Tools Platform project, with the
great help of the Eclipse Management Organization.
The goal of this project is to apply the Eclipse standards to the
Web/J2EE application-tooling domain. It is divided into two
subprojects: the Web Standard Tools and the J2EE Standard Tools
subprojects. ObjectWeb and Eteration are offering to contribute
the open source Lomboz project for the initial code base of the
Web Tools Platform project.
The official 30-day review period will end on May 27. In the
meantime, you, dear members of the community, are invited to
review, comment, improve this proposal and volunteer to join the
project! Hurry up, time is flying...
Eclipse WebTools proposal is on Eclipse's web site:
http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/eclipse-webtools/index.html.
Enjoy.
JOnAS on the Way to Certification
---------------------------------
Sun and ObjectWeb celebrated the event in March: ObjectWeb, as a
non-profit organization, was awarded a scholarship to help the
certification of JOnAS as compliant with J2EE 1.4. As Sun's
Marketing Director for Java Development Eric Mahé put it: "This
idea of bringing together the open-source community and what is
today a major industrial trend, namely Java, was something we?ve
pursued since the creation of Java technology". The JOnAS team put
out version 4.0, the first release of JOnAS to cover the J2EE 1.4
specification. It is now tested against the J2EE compatibility
test kit to finalize its compliance with the specification.
Certification is expected by 2004 H2... Stay tuned!

Headlines
---------
Sun and INRIA Kick-off J2EE(tm) License Agreement for the
Certification of JOnAS
* Sun Microsystems Inc, the creator of Java(tm) technology,
and INRIA, the French national institute for research in
computer science and control, officially kicked-off the
license agreement signed by the two parties for the
certification of the compliance of JOnAS with the level 1.4
of J2EE
* Jean-Pierre Laisné, ObjectWeb?s Chairman: "ObjectWeb members
like Dassault Aviation will use our technology and make sure
it meets their requirements, which is of major importance
for the activity of the ecosystem."
* Franz Meyer, CEO, Red Hat France: "Red Hat joined ObjectWeb
to make the link between the consortium and the users and
therefore increase the sustainability of JOnAS. Red Hat is
developing an application server which will of course be
based on JOnAS. Targeted to enterprise customers, it will be
complemented with services, certifications and developer
tools based on Eclipse."
* Dominique Potier, Group Scientific Director Software
Technologies, Thales Group: "We at Thales just defined
Netframework, a new architecture for our information system
in which JOnAS is the J2EE application server. JOnAS will be
deployed on a limited number of sites this summer, and in
all Thales in 2005. The certification is all the more
important that it leaves open a possibility of replacement
if necessary. The fact that several big companies make the
same choice is an indirect factor of durability."
* Valère Robin, Senior Manager, France Telecom R&D: "For about
15 years, France Telecom R&D has been working on middleware.
In August 2003, JOnAS has been officially introduced in the
catalog of software solutions for France Telecom
subsidiaries. The J2EE certification is a very interesting
perspective for the IT management because it will facilitate
migrations, it will permit to rationalize the management of
J2EE skills and to capitalize on J2EE on the long term."
* See: http://www.objectweb.org/phorum/read.php?f=25&i=61&t=61
(snapshots taken during the celebration are available online).
JOnAS Undergoes Tests of Compatibility With J2EE 1.4
* ObjectWeb announces that JOnAS 4.0, its Java application
server, is currently being tested against the J2EE 1.4
compatibility test suite provided by Sun.
* The version 4.0 of JOnAS is ObjectWeb?s first implementation
of the J2EE to be tested for compliance with the J2EE 1.4
specification. According to the roadmap defined by the JOnAS
development team, JOnAS is expected to be certified J2EE 1.4
compatible by 2004 H2.

Linagora Joins ObjectWeb
* Linagora, French leading integrator specialized in free
software solutions, joins ObjectWeb.
* Alexandre Zapolsky, CEO of Linagora: "We think that free
software can help create durable employment and foster the
development of technological know-how on a local scale. For
Linagora, it is a natural move to join one of the European
communities that proved the most dynamic, for the benefit of
employment and European innovation."

Funambol Joins ObjectWeb
* ObjectWeb welcomes Funambol and extends its open-source
middleware portfolio with Sync4j, a SyncML-compliant Java
platform for mobile application development.
* Fabrizio Capobianco, CEO of Funambol: "The ObjectWeb
consortium is quickly becoming the center of excellence for
open source projects in the middleware arena. Thanks to the
recent release of version 2.0, Sync4j is now the reference
framework for developers of wireless applications. We are
glad to become a member of the consortium and to be an
active part of its success"

Lomboz Goes Open Source
* Lomboz(tm), the popular Eclipse plug-in for J2EE(tm) / Web
Services development, became Open Source as Eteration, the
project sponsor, joined ObjectWeb.
* After Lomboz has been published on ObjectWeb's Forge, it has
been downloaded by more than 25.000 developers worldwide
every month - thus becoming the leading Open Source
workbench for J2EE development with Eclipse.

First JORAM Users' Day
ObjectWeb and the JORAM core development team are setting up a
JORAM Users' Day on June 17th in Paris. This day will be the first
attempt of direct exchanges between members of the JORAM community.
The meeting is an opportunity to report on the credibility of the
JORAM solution and to raise questions and answers about the
durability and evolution of this open source product. Details
about the JORAM Users Day can be found at

Enhydra Sites Migration Continuation and End
The ObjectWeb Consortium has taken over sponsorship of Enhydra.org
since April 2002 following the withdrawal of Lutris Technologies.
At the end of January 2004, most Enhydra.org projects have been
migrated to the ObjectWeb infrastructure - powered in particular
by GForge. The old Enhydra.org server will be now stopped next
month at June, 15 2004 (it will be then used only as US download
mirror site). As a consequence, all the remaining hosted projects
are encouraged to migrate to ObjectWeb. For more information,
please see the announcement.
Web Rings for Training Material
* ObjectWeb's site now hosts documentation "web rings". These
rings are dedicated to technical and educational material in
the area of middleware. Each ring (currently one in English
and one in French) aims at listing web sites that provide
educational material (slides, handouts, tutorials, ...)
about middleware components, and also technical
documentation such as software documentation or code
walkthrough. Anybody can contribute: although hosted by
ObjectWeb those rings are not limited to ObjectWeb members
or projects.
